The Zonal story is 45 years in the making. Our founder, Ralph McLean, ran the family’s hotel near Edinburgh, and in 1979 he decided to solve the problem of shortfalls in stock and takings. The EPoS system he invented was spotted by the famed brewer Scottish & Newcastle, who persuaded him to adapt it for their entire pub estate – where it gave both site managers and head office a level of information that had never been available before. It wasn’t long before Scottish & Newcastle were joined by other big names, and today we employ more than 800 people.

We’re still a family business with four family members on the board, including our CEO, Stuart McLean. Stuart acts as Zonal’s custodian, and his passion for our customers is exemplified in our company culture and values. Under Stuart’s direction, and by listening and responding to our customers, Stuart has led Zonal’s continued investment in technology innovation.

We have a long tradition of charitable work. We’re actively involved with the digital charity box Pennies, a proud partner of PubAid, and work closely with Only a Pavement Away, which helps find stable employment for people facing or experiencing homelessness, prison leavers and veterans.
